Bees can be our best buddies, or our worst enemies! They pollenate our crops and flowers making sure that while they gather food for themselves, they provide food for us. (Aint that sweet?) But if you run into a bunch of bees with a bad attitude, it can seem like they want to kill us! And that does happen from time to time.
- Honey: For centuries, humans and animals alike have enjoyed the sweet taste of honey. Honey bees work long and hard to build a stock pile of honey for the winter. Honey never goes bad! And the shipwrecks of the egyptions still had clay pots full of honey. When discovered, the honey was crystalised, but still eatable.
- Swarm : A bee swarm is comprised of a few thousand worker bees, a few drones, and a queen. They are all on there way from an over crowded hive, to a new one. They have no honey, or eggs, or young. The swarm has nothing to protect, so is less likely to become angry, or agressive. A bee swarm normaly will move on in 1-2 days. The swarm is resting.
Hive: A hive is an established colony of bees. They have honey, eggs, and baby bees. They have a queen bee, and several thousand workers. The queen will lay 1200 eggs each day, and the other female bees, the workers, will defend the hive with there lives!
Africanized bees/ Killer bees: Called killer bees, because of there agressive nature, the killer bees are a hybread. A few colonies escaped an experamental area in south America back in the 70s and now we have them in places like Florida, California, and Arizona. Several fatalities have been the cause of Killer Bees, but thety can be worked with just like any other honey bee.
Why you must remove the honey: When you exterminate a hive in a wall, you have taken the tare givers away from the hive. The bees regulate the temp of the hive so the wax wont melt. Now that they are dead, the wax will melt, and the honey wil flow down hill. Soon the dry wall will be saturated, and honey will soak your carpet. Then the stench of thopusands of rotting bees. Wouldnt it have been easier to keep the bees alive, and make them clean it up? Then we take the box with the bees and the honey, to there new home!
Bee keeper: A bee keeper knows the word patiance! Never try to get a bee to do what he doesnt want to. The trick to being a good bee keeper is to know what the bee wants, and then offer it to them!
